Network Status
All
systems are functioning normally.
If you suspect
that a network problem may exist somewhere, you may
be able to find a clue as to where the problem exists
by tracing the network path to the Internet site you
are trying to access.
If you are
using Windows 95 or 98, try the following procedure:
First, open an
MS-DOS window by clicking the following:
Start -->
Programs --> MS-DOS Prompt
Then type in the
following in the MS-DOS window:
tracert
<address of site you are trying to access>
For example, if
you wished to trace the route to yahoo.com, you would
enter:
tracert
yahoo.com
This will show
the connection path to your destination. It will show
each of the machines in the path, and the time it
takes to send a signal to that machine and receive a
reply. If a machine is having problems, the
"ping time" may be long (greater than 1000
milliseconds), or it may time out and show a ' * ' as
an indication of the timeout.
Type in
"exit" (without the quote marks) to close
the MS-DOS window.
In most cases,
if there is an indication of a network problem,
someone is already aware of it and working on it, and
it usually won't be too long before it is fixed.
